Girly Girl Dollar Store Flower Hat

My hat was inspired by a blog I read at  "The Life of a Cheap Chick" at sundiandmike.blogspot.com/. She has posted some wonderful links for different ways to sew flowers. The following is my version.

Things you will need:
Stocking Hat from Dollar Store $1.00
Fake silk flowers from Dollar Store (or from around the house if you have some) $1.00
Scrap piece of fabric about 2 inches X 2 inches
1 Button (or more if you choose)
1 piece of lace (or any other notion you make have)
Needle and thread

First, you will need to decide where you want to cut the end of the hat. It would not be a bad idea to have someone try it on for guidance.

Now, we need to sew the edge to get the frill look. Plus, this helps the end from fraying. Using your sewing machine, zig zag stitch the edge of the hat. On my first try I used the default settings for my zig zag stitch. I wasn’t quite satisfied with how it turned out so I went around a second time using a shorter, but wider stitch.

Now, I have seen this part several different ways. So you know, there is no wrong way of decorating your hat. I have seen hats with the decorations hot glued on, some with stitching. Use whatever method you’re most comfortable with. With this hat, I used a needle and thread. I just felt it would be the quickest.  I am all about easy. Besides, this was my first time decorating a stocking cap and I am sure it won’t be my last.

I placed the lace on first. I just laid it where I wanted it. I was looking for a bow effect but did not tie it as I wanted it to lay flat for further layering on it. I used my needle and thread to sew just a couple of stitches.

I dismantled one of the silk flowers I purchased so the plastic was no longer attached. I placed the leaves on and folded one over and stitched it in place.

I then made what is called a Yo Yo to place as the eye of my flower. I just used a scrap piece of fabric and cut a circle. Don’t worry, there is no need to be perfect. I straight stitched around the edge of the circle. When you reach the starting point, tug on the thread to gather the circle into a rosette. I then stitch to the middle and knot stitch to secure it.

Place your yo yo in the center of your flower and secure it to the hat with your needle and thread.

I then sew a button on top of the yo yo.

Ta Da! It’s done! Since the flowers I picked were so big I only put on one flower. Now it is time to try it on!

I sooo, so wish I was a better photographer! All in due time, I guess.

This hat cost me about $2.17 to make. The fabric for the yo yo was from my scrap drawer. If it is more than 2 inches wide I put it in the drawer. I do not throw scraps away. The lace was from a stash I received from a very wonderful woman from Henry County Free Cycle. It is a yahoo group I found where local people post their wants and haves. This group is for “Free” only! If you create a yahoo account I am sure there is one in your area. Remember, Google is your best friend! The button came from a set of three that I purchased, who knows when, from Wal-Mart on clearance for 50 cents.

If you decide to make your own please send me pics. I would love to see what others do. And, if you need help, or something is not quite clear email or comment and I will help. My email : sewamber@gmail.com

Next week I plan on posting a tutorial for leg warmers upcycled from a sweater. Be sure to come back to check it out! I will be using lace again!

Blessings to all!

Spinach Lasagna Rolls

I originally found this recipe here on skinnytaste.com. She gets all the credit. I changed it a bit because the Handsome Man does not like ricotta. Pooh. Yankee to Southern Bell

We moved from Ohio to Mississippi in 2014. The BIG PLAN was to sell our Ohio house and purchase land, put a mobile home on it, paying with funds from the sale of the house. The idea was that we would not have a mortgage payment. Sounds good, huh? It does to me too. But Murphy's Law doesn't think so. (want more irony, we stayed with the Murphy's for while throughout some of this) We have been faced with many challenges over the last few years. But I am proud to say we do not have a mortgage payment and we do not have credit card debt either. First challenge: LAND It is good to know people. A friend sold us some land that had a structure on it that he had started himself. This is what the inside looked like: That is after cleaning it up a bit and running the electrical. It cost us more than we planned to spend. And biggest challenge. Its not finished. We really can't move into it looking like this. But look at the view: THAT'S MY BACKYARD! After ...

Canned Venison Meat

We love deer meat! We also enjoy in the fact that we process our own meat. While most freeze deer meat, canning is a rewarding option as well. I love the idea of saving freezer space by canning. This raw pack recipe is super easy. You will be surprised by how much broth the meat creates. Canning meat requires a pressure canner.
